Exploración de las narrativas bilingües orales y escritas en español e inglés

Abstract:The main objective of this study is to investigate the similarities and/or difference on the oral and written personal narratives told by bilingual Spanish and English high school students. Previous research in the field suggests that bilingual students, in some cases, have the tendency to use different narratives strategies, depending on the language in which they tell a personal story (McCabe, 1997; McCabe and Bliss, 2003; McCabe, Bailey, and Melzi, 2008; Spicer-Escalante, 2002, 2005; Shiro, 2003; Uccelli, 2008). Participants for this study, 5 women and 5 men, are 10th and 11th grade students from a high school located in the South West of the United States. Participants wrote a personal narration in Spanish first; and few days later, they were asked to write the same narration in English. Later, during a personal interview, students were asked to orally narrate the story that they had written, first in Spanish and then in English. The oral and written narratives were analyzed based on the Labovian Highpoint Analysis (Labov and Waletzky, 1967; Labov, 1972, 2010) that examines personal narratives according six different features: Abstract, Orientation, Complication, Resolution, Evaluation, and Coda. The results yielded by this study, supporting previous research findings, suggest that there are very important differences in the structures that students use when narrating a personal story orally or in a written fashion. This study reveals also that participants make use of specific and very particular rhetorical features when narrating a story in either Spanish or in EnglishResumen:El objetivo de este estudio es investigar las diferencias y/o similitudes que existen en las narrativas personales bilingües, español e inglés, de un grupo de estudiantes de escuela secundaria, cuando cuentan una historia de manera oral o de forma escrita. Los estudios comparativos de las narrativas orales en español y en inglés sugieren que los niños nativo-hablantes del español, en algunos casos, tienen la tendencia a producir narrativas diferentes dependiendo de la lengua en que relatan las historias (McCabe, 1997; McCabe and Bliss, 2003; McCabe, Bailey, and Melzi, 2008; Spicer-Escalante, 2002, 2005; Shiro, 2003; Uccelli, 2008). Los participantes de este estudio, 5 mujeres y 5 hombres, son estudiantes de los grados 10 y 11 de una escuela secundaria del Suroeste de los Estados Unidos. Los estudiantes escribieron primero una narración en español y unos días después escribieron la misma narración en inglés. Posteriormente, durante una entrevista personal, se les pidió que contaran la narración que habían escrito, primero en español y luego en inglés. Las muestras recogidas del discurso oral y escrito en las dos lenguas se analizaron posteriormente de acuerdo con los Rasgos Estructurales del Análisis de Relatos de Labov (Labovian Highpoint Analysis) (Labov and Waletzky, 1967; Labov, 1972, 2010) que examina las narrativas personales con base en seis rubros: Resumen o Abstracto, Orientación, Complicación de la Acción, Resultado o Resolución, Evaluación y Coda. Los resultados de este estudio apoyan previas investigaciones y sugieren la existencia de diferencias notables no solo en la estructura narrativa de los estudiantes bilingües a nivel de discurso oral y escrito; sino que también revelan que hay diferencias retóricas particulares y únicas en la expresión narrativa en las dos lenguas
