On the use of the academic motivation scale (AMS) with young students

This paper discusses the reasons that leads young people to attend school, describing the results obtained by applying the instrument the Academic Motivation Scale (AMS), adapted version from Vallerand et al.(1992). It consists of a quantitative study in which we used statistical techniques commonly applied in the field of psychometrics. The validation process of the AMS involved different steps that began with the application of this instrument in a sample of 133 students attending the last year of elementary school or first year high school students in private and public institutions in Porto Alegre, Brazil. It were identified six factors associated with intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, and the absence of motivation, which showed satisfactory internal consistency. In general, the students have a more motivated than discouraged about the school. Extrinsic motivation proved to be predominant. The public school was one in which students were more motivated. The instrument presented satisfactory psychometric qualities. It allows better understand the student reasons for school attendance, what is relevant in educational practice. Este artigo aborda os motivos que levam jovens a frequentar a escola, descrevendo resultados coletados a partir da aplicação do instrumento Escala de Motivação Acadêmica (EMA), versão adaptada de Vallerand et al. Consiste de um estudo quantitativo no qual foram utilizadas técnicas estatísticas comumente aplicadas no campo da Psicometria. O processo de validação do EMA envolveu diferentes etapas que iniciaram com a aplicação deste instrumento numa amostra de 133 estudantes que cursavam o último ano do Ensino Fundamental ou o primeiro ano do Ensino Médio em instituições privadas e públicas de Porto Alegre, RS, Brasil. Foram identificados seis fatores associados à motivação intrínseca, extrínseca e à ausência de motivação, os quais apresentaram satisfatória consistência interna. De um modo geral, os alunos apresentam-se mais motivados do que desmotivados em relação à escola. A motivação extrínseca revelou-se preponderante. A escola pública municipal foi aquela nos quais os alunos se mostraram mais motivados. O instrumento EMA apresentou qualidades psicométricas satisfatórias, e a análise dos resultados permitiu um melhor entendimento dos motivos que levam os alunos a frequentar a escola, o que é relevante na prática educacional.
