Tratamiento de las fracturas diafisiarias de húmero: estudio observacional

Introduction: The humeral shaft fractures represent about 3% of all fractures, may be accompanied by important neurovascular injuries and greatly affect the functionality of the patients who suffer them. Objective: To describe the characteristics of patients with fracture of the humeral shaft and the treatments applied in the University Hospital San José de Popayán, Colombia. Methods: An observational, cross-sectional study, in the period 2006-2010, in patients older than 18 years admitted to the emergency department. Results: There was a sample of 60 patients, mostly men (68.3%), with an average age of 42 years. The main cause of the trauma was traffic accidents (36.7%). The lesions were type A (63.3%) and were located mainly in the middle third (58.3%). The most of patients were treated surgically (85%) and among the complications recorded, the limitation to movement (30.8%) was highlighted. A statistically significant association was found between age and the mechanism of the trauma (p=0.018). Conclusion: One fifth of patients treated surgically presented complications, so it is considered necessary to develop studies that allow objectifying the choice of one therapy or another in the search of the greatest benefit for patients.Introducción: Las fracturas de la diáfisis humeral representan alrededor del 3% de todas las fracturas, pueden acompañarse de lesiones neurovasculares importantes y afectar considerablemente la funcionalidad de los pacientes que las sufren. Objetivo: describir las características de los pacientes con fractura de la diáfisis humeral y los tratamientos aplicados en el Hospital Universitario San José de Popayán, Colombia Métodos: Estudio observacional de corte transversal en el periodo 2006-2010, en pacientes mayores de 18 años ingresados al servicio de urgencias. Resultados: Se contó con una muestra de 60 pacientes, en su mayoría hombres (68,3%), con una edad media de 42 años. La primera causa del traumatismo fueron los accidentes de tránsito (36,7%). Las lesiones fueron de tipo A (63,3%) y se ubicaron en el tercio medio principalmente (58,3%). La mayoría de los pacientes fueron tratados quirúrgicamente (85%). Entre las complicaciones registradas destacó la limitación al movimiento (30,8%). Se encontró asociación estadísticamente significativa entre la edad y el mecanismo del trauma (p=0,018). Conclusión: Una quinta parte de los pacientes tratados quirúrgicamente presentó complicaciones, por lo que se considera necesario desarrollar estudios que permitan objetivar la elección de una terapia u otra en la búsqueda del mayor beneficio para los pacientes
