Yihadismo en el Sahel: la expansión de la amenaza oscura

Although they are not in a position to militarily compromise the concerted action of the regional military forces, external powers and international organizations operating in the Sahel region, terrorist groups show an increasing ability to carry out military attacks and maintain a strong presence in the media and in social networks. In addition, the ability of extremist ideologies to gain adherents among Muslim communities that feel subjected to historical grievances and the high profitability of the criminal enterprises they control favor their recovery from military setbacks and, at the same time, they are a powerful source of inspiration for other groups that try to imitate them. This, together with the possibility of forming new alliances between extremist organizations that can translate into spectacular attacks inside and outside the region in a race to win the public of potential recruits and gain a greater presence in the international media, makes it necessary to examine the evolution of the extremist groups in the Sahel that are in the orbits of Al Qaeda and the Daesh, as well as the complicated political, economic and military game in which they are currently involved. It is about identifying their strategies, analyzing their resilience and assessing their chances of surviving the concerted action of regional governments and the international community itself, committed to preventing the center of gravity of global jihadist action from moving to this complex region.Aunque no están en condiciones de comprometer militarmente la acción concertada de las fuerzas de seguridad locales, potencias externas y organizaciones internacionales, los grupos terroristas que operan en la región del Sahel muestran una creciente capacidad de realizar ataques militares y de mantener una fuerte presencia en los medios y en las redes sociales. Además, la habilidad de las ideologías extremistas para obtener adeptos entre las comunidades musulmanas que se sienten sometidas a quejas históricas y la alta rentabilidad de las empresas criminales que controlan favorecen su recuperación frente a los reveses militares y, al mismo tiempo, son una fuente poderosa de inspiración para otros grupos que intentan imitarlos. Esto, junto con la posibilidad de formar nuevas alianzas entre organizaciones extremistas que pueden traducirse en ataques espectaculares dentro y fuera de la región, hacen necesario examinar la evolución de los grupos extremistas en el Sahel que se encuentran en las órbitas de Al Qaeda y del Daesh, así como el complicado juego político, económico y militar en que están actualmente involucrados. Se trata de identificar sus estrategias, analizar su resiliencia y evaluar sus posibilidades de sobrevivir a la acción concertada de los gobiernos regionales y de la propia comunidad internacional, empeñada en evitar que el centro de gravedad de la acción yihadista global se traslade a esta compleja región
