The observation that there still lacked a phono-phonological description of the segmental system of educated speech of Santiago, Chile, despite the number of phonetic investigations that have been made on the speech of this country, resulted in a study on the allophonic behaviour of the educated speech of the capital of Chile in order that there be a point of reference that would serve as the standard of the country. The sample upon which the description is based consists of approximately two and a half hours of recorded speech from various registers produced by 40 educated speakers from three age groups.
