La implantación de la alta nobleza en Burgos (1476-1516):: una aproximación a través de los linajes de Rojas, Manrique, Sarmiento y Velasco

The presence of the high nobility in Castilian royal cities in the late Middle Ages is an uncontested fact. However, the process of noble encroachment was not equal in all cities: there were differences on account of the space and, especially, of the members of the nobility. This paper presents a first comparative study of the different models of noble penetration in the royal city of Burgos between 1476 and 1516. Based on the analysis of Burgos municipal records, the settlement in the city of four noble bloodlines –the Rojas, the Sarmiento, the Manrique and the Velasco lineages– is examined, as well as their participation in the town government. This study will show how the positions occupied by the nobility in Burgos result mainly from the role played by the nobility in Castilian politics, but also from the relationship they built with the urban elite.La presencia de la alta nobleza en las ciudades del realengo castellano a finales de la Edad Media es indiscutible. Sin embargo, no todas ellas se vieron sometidas a un mismo proceso de injerencia nobiliaria que varió en función del espacio, pero, sobre todo, de los componentes del grupo nobiliario. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo realizar una primera aproximación a los diferentes modelos de penetración nobiliaria que se observan entre 1476 y 1516 en la ciudad realenga de Burgos. Con este fin se examinará el asentamiento en la ciudad e intervención en el gobierno municipal de cuatro linajes nobiliarios (Rojas, Sarmiento, Manrique y Velasco) a partir del análisis de la documentación municipal burgalesa. Este estudio permitirá comprobar cómo las posiciones ocupadas por la nobleza en Burgos respondieron, en mayor o menor medida, al papel que los diferentes linajes desempeñaron en la política castellana, así como a las relaciones que los nobles mantuvieron con la élite urbana
