O latim como ferramenta de expansão do vocabulário do português

This paper aims at offering a brief picture of the state of the teaching of Latin in Brazil, commenting on current perspectives on the field and offering an etymological approach to Latin teaching, with the goal of expanding the students' vocabulary in Portuguese. While it does not agree with the fallacy that it is necessary to learn Latin to know Portuguese well, it does propose a shortcut to vocabulary acquisition, since it does not seem to come naturally to all students of Latin that the roots of this language have derivations in Portuguese, being helpful to incorporate some activities that demonstrate such evidence in the classroom, for the benefit of students.Este artigo tem como objetivo traçar um breve panorama do ensino de latim no país, comentar perspectivas atuais para o campo e sugerir uma abordagem etimológica do ensino da língua que possa proporcionar a amplicação do vocabulário, no português, dos alunos. Não se trata de um retorno à falácia do aprender latim para saber bem português, mas de um atalho para a expansão vocabular, pois não é natural para todos a percepção dos radicais latinos em suas derivações na língua portuguesa, fazendo-se necessário pensar uma forma de ensino que demonstre tais evidências em benefício dos alunos
