Meio ambiente e sociedade: as transformações na paisagem do Oeste Catarinense, na segunda metade do século XX

The West of Santa Catarina underwent several environmental transformations, mostly caused by the anthropization of the landscape. Deforestation intensified in the first half of the 20th century, after the occupation of the region and due to timber activities. With the deforestation there was a reduction in the timber volume, allowing the intensification of other economic activities, such as agriculture and monoculture of exotic trees. These activists, it significantly altered the social groups that lived in the region. The objective of this article is to analyze the historical process of environmental transformation in the West of Santa Catarina, after the process of occupation of the region. In order to achieve the proposed objectives we will use as sources: government reports, demographic censuses, reports of colonizing companies, regional and state newspapers and federal legislation. In the 1960s the Brazilian Forestry Development Institute (IBDF) was created and the Forest Code was promulgated in 1965, which acted intensely in the region. Only with the promulgation of the 1988 Federal Constitution does the Mata Atlântica become a national patrimony, having, to some extent, greater control over actions on the environment.O Oeste de Santa Catarina passou por diversas transformações ambientais, em sua maioria provocados pela antropização da paisagem. O desmatamento foi intensificado na primeira metade do século XX, após o processo de ocupação da região e em função das atividades madeireiras. Com o desmatamento houve uma redução do volume madeirável, possibilitando a intensificação de outras atividades econômicas, como agropecuária e monocultura de árvores exóticas. Estas atividades, alteraram significativamente os grupos sociais que viviam na região. O objetivo deste artigo é analisar o processo histórico da transformação ambiental no Oeste catarinense, após o processo de ocupação da região. Para atingir os objetivos propostos utilizaremos como fontes: relatórios de governo, censos demográficos, relatórios das companhias colonizadoras, os periódicos regionais e estaduais e a legislação federal. Na década de 1960 foi criado o Instituto Brasileiro de Desenvolvimento Florestal (IBDF) e promulgado o Código Florestal em 1965, que atuaram de forma intensa na região. Somente com a promulgação da Constituição Federal de 1988 é que a Mata Atlântica passa a ser considerada patrimônio nacional, havendo, de certa maneira, maior controle nas ações sobre o meio ambiente
