Abstract This study explores the lingusitic attitudes of parents in Colombian and Mexican families residing in Houston, United States. Using a qualitative methodology and insturments such as interviews and observation, it seeks to examine how the linguistic attitudes of parents contribute to the preservation or loss of Spanish. Results indicate that families of both nationalities show positive attitudes toward Spanish, but that their motivations differ. Colombian parents have an instrumental motivation, since they see Spanish as a means to access better job opportunities. Mexican parents, on the other hand, are more flexible regarding the use of Spanish at home and accept it with fewer prejudices than Colombian families. All of the parents ...
