Adicción a Internet: de la hipotética entidad diagnóstica a la realidad clínica

The emergence of a new worldwide, interactive system of communication has produced an important transformation of our society. Recent arguments point to the existence of an addictive use of the internet and propose the existence of a diagnostic entity called Internet Addiction. This article reviews the most important studies of possible internet addiction and its diagnosis. The need for research on the type of use that is being made of the internet and its relationship to variables that have theoretical relevance for psychological addictions is pointed out. The goal would be to adapt the diagnostic criteria of Internet addiction to existing empirical data which are representative of clinical reality.El surgimiento de un nuevo sistema de comunicación de carácter mundial e interactivo está ocasionando una importante transformación en nuestra sociedad. Recientemente han aparecido argumentos que apuntan a la existencia de un uso adictivo de la red y que proponen la existencia de una entidad diagnóstica denominada Trastorno de Adicción a Internet. En este artículo se presentan las principales investigaciones sobre la posible adicción a Internet y su diagnóstico y se plantea la necesidad de dirigir los esfuerzos de la investigación a realizar estudios que revelen qué tipo de uso se está haciendo de este recurso y su relación con las variables que teóricamente se plantean como necesariamente asociadas a las adicciones psicológicas, con el fin de adaptar los criterios diagnósticos de adicción a Internet a los datos empíricos con los que se cuentan representativos de la realidad clínica
