Agresión a la mujer como factor de riesgo múltiple de depresión

The Battered Woman Syndrome presents a series of characteristics that act as etiopathogenic elements of depression. It is, firstly, an important psychosocial and physical stress factor that may act as a catalyst for depressive disorders. Secondly, this type of violence mainly occurs in the domestic environment, which provokes feelings of loss, guilt, and helplessness in the victim. When violence is perpetuated, the woman presents cognitive distortions, low self-esteem and, at other times, feelings of guilt and helplessness. Lastly, the battered woman finds herself in a situation of social isolation and dependence on her attacker, which will again affect her self-esteem, deprive her of adequate social support, and increase her feeling of the attacker’s power and control. In accordance with the different theories, all of these phenomena may act, separately or together, as etiopathogenic sources of depression, increasing the probability of this disorder appearing in women who are victims of domestic violence.El síndrome de maltrato a la mujer presenta una serie de características que actúan como elementos etiopatogénicos de depresión. Es, en primer lugar, un importante estresor psicosocial y físico que puede comportarse como factor precipitante de cuadros depresivos. En segundo lugar, este tipo de violencia se ejerce fundamentalmente en el ámbito doméstico, circunstancia que genera sentimientos de pérdida, culpabilidad e indefensión en la víctima. Cuando se perpetua la agresión aparecen en la mujer distorsiones cognitivas, disminución de la autoestima y, otra vez, sentimientos de culpabilidad e indefensión. Finalmente, la mujer maltratada queda sometida a una situación de asilamiento social y de dependencia del agresor que volverá a afectar a su autoestima, le privará de un soporte social adecuado e incrementará la sensación de poder y control del agresor. Todos estos fenómenos pueden comportarse, atendiendo a las distintas teorías, aislada o conjuntamente como fuentes etiopatogénicas de depresión, aumentando la probabilidad de que aparezca este trastorno en las mujeres victimas de malos tratos por parte de la pareja
