Article departs from the premise that conceives direct democracy as a way to strengthen representative democracy, as long as a strong political culture and an institutional framework rooted in the fundamental democratic principles exist. In realizing a comparative perspective based primarily on the constitutional provisions of the 18 countries of Latin America, its primary objective is to compare the institutional arrangements of direct democracy, in order to establish the common features and the most significant differences within the region.
