Representaciones de género en la construcción de identidad de un grupo de estudiantes universitarios en Bogotá

From the outlook of qualitative research, the present study proposes to establish the gender representations in the construction of identity of a group of 18 men and women currently following undergraduate studies at Universities la Salle, El Bosque, Distrital Francisco José de Caldas –Bogotá–. A semi-structured interview was used to inquire about self concept, the differences and relations between the sexes, their images of masculine and feminine. By means of content analysis, the possible variations in the identity representations were explored, along with its reiterations and emphasis. The findings show that the young people participating in the research, although they value the change and the novelty of being men and woman, at the same time recognize themselves in a traditional masculinity based on the power, social superiority and control over woman and in a femininity characterized by the being for others and the subjection to the male, which doesn’t prevent the questioning of what has been previously learned. The young women reveal themselves as the ones producing the main changes while their male partners feel in general more satisfied with themselves and their male prerogatives, however feeling somewhat restless by the change in women. Friendship and partnership fundamentally organize their relationships in the university and provide them with a sense of equality that is in profound contrast with their more traditional gender representations.Desde un enfoque cualitativo de investigación, el estudio se propuso establecer las representaciones de género en la construcción de identidad de un grupo de dieciocho hombres y mujeres, estudiantes de pregrado de las universidades la Salle, El Bosque y Distrital Francisco José de Caldas –Bogotá–. Se utilizó una entrevista semiestructurada para indagar sobre el autoconcepto y la autoimagen, las diferencias y relaciones entre los sexos, sus imágenes de lo masculino y femenino. Mediante análisis de contenido se exploraron posibles variaciones en las representaciones identitarias, junto con sus reiteraciones y énfasis. Los hallazgos muestran que las y los jóvenes que participaron en el estudio, aunque valoran el cambio y lo nuevo de ser mujeres y hombres, se reconocen al mismo tiempo en una masculinidad tradicional basada en el poder, la superioridad social y el control sobre las mujeres y en una feminidad caracterizada por el ser para otros y la supeditación al varón, que no impide el cuestionamiento de lo aprendido. Las jóvenes se revelan como las que realizan los principales cambios, mientras que sus compañeros se sienten en general más satisfechos consigo mismos y sus prerrogativas de género, pero en todo caso, inquietos por los cambios de las mujeres. La amistad y el compañerismo organizan fundamentalmente sus relaciones en la universidad y les proporcionan sentido de igualdad que contrasta profundamente con sus representaciones de género más tradicionales
