Although the Geneva Convention of 1958 allowed the creation of a contiguous zone, relatively few states adopted a legislation that effectively establish a zone of that nature. Subsequently however the increasing adoption of a contiguous zone by coastal States could be seen. More recently, it can be seen that eighty States claim a contiguous zone, while the participation in the UNCLOS has reached the number 160 parties. After a period of uncertainty the contiguous zone concept has been re-affirmed as a concrete reality in legislative practice of States.
