Greenhouse gas and criteria pollutants emissions as well as the potential for electric power generation were estimated for four different scenarios of final disposal of solid urban waste (MSW) in San Jose: landfill, incineration, composting and mechanical-biological treatment. Generation and composition waste data reported by the San Jose Department of Environmental Services were used as input for a life cycle analysis as well as the respective materials and energy flows for each proposal, based on the formulation of the respective balances of mass and energy.
