The military occupation of Afghanistan by the United States arises from the needs to reassert its hegemonic power. However, the reasons behind the engagement of nato troops in the country 15 years later are much less evident. In fact, it was not possible to eliminate or reduce the actions of insurgencies and the political situation became more complex. Therefore, the objective of this article is to analyze the Afghan occupation by nato in the light of the concepts proposed by structural realism in order to criticize the persistence of military strategy and its detrimental effects on United States’ national interests.
