Since the middle of the 20th century in the Colombian Caribbean, the picós (sound systems) began to be used in nightclub business and dance parties in the popular neighborhoods of the main cities of the region. Initially they reproduced Hispanophone Caribbean music and afterwards their repertoire also included Francophone and Anglo Antillean music and soon they were amplifying music of West Africa. In recent times the picós have been playing African-style music by Colombian Caribbean producers, DJs and musicians. In the city of Barranquilla, former owners of picós, musical journalists, and various fans became collectors of music played by picós in different times and have formed a community around such activity.
