The article discusses the use of race as a concept and as a technology of power in the discourse about citizenship in Argentina between the 19th and the 21st centuries. Firstly, we focus on the fictional construction of «the people of the Republic» made by the nineteenth century elites and by the scientific culture at the early twentieth century, on the basis of which is the myth of white Argentina and its consequences: the exclusion of indigenous and afro-descendants populations of the national whole. Secondly, we analyze the State mechanisms to control these populations.
