The paper applies Piagetian theory of cognitive development to school mathematics. In maths learning it is necessary to take into account the limitations of the child�s cognitive capacity interms of the particular stage of development. It is also necessary to have achieved certain automatism of operations, typical of a level of development, in order to progress to the next level. It seems that an information processing model is a fruitful framework for studying this field.
