This paper analyzes the possible inverse relationship between economic growth as measured by real per capita Gross Domestic Product by State and relative crime levels rates as measured by common, federal and the high impact crimes on relative rates per hundred thousand inhabitants. I analyze the 31 states and the Federal District of Mexico with annual data from 2003-2010. The empirical analysis is based on a panel data econometric model with fixed effects.
