Event representation and legal discussion: Novel linguistic theory provides framework to identify grammatical tactics at the service of legal authors’ goals

This article introduces to legal practitioners the basic concepts of Systemic Functional Linguistics, a theory which enables language users to make all otherwise subconscious grammatical decisions conscious, and also become aware of how grammar subconsciously shapes their perception of events.. Knowledge of this theory should enable them to make more appropriate and effective grammatical choices for fulfilling the purposes behind any text (legal or not). The article also discusses the potential impact that studies on legal texts from a Systemic Functional Linguistics approach could have on the practice of Law; no studies of the like have ever been conducted.El presente artículo pretende introducir a los profesionales del Derecho los conceptos básicos de la Lingüística Sistémico Funcional, una teoría que permite adquirir conciencia de las decisiones gramaticales que de lo contrario se suelen tomar automática y subconscientemente. A su vez, la teoríapermite entender cómo la gramática actúa sobre nuestra percepción de los hechos a nivel subconsciente. El resultado de tener estos conocimientos consiste en una toma de decisiones gramaticales más apropiadas y eficaces para el cumplimiento de los objetivos de cualquier texto, jurídico o no. El artículo también reflexiona sobre el impacto que podría causar el estudio de textos jurídicos desde la perspectiva de la Lingüística Sistémico Funcional en la práctica del Derecho, lo cual jamás se ha llevado a cabo aún
