¿Influye la realidad económica en el suicidio?: el caso colombiano

This paper claims to show part of the relationship between the suicide rate and the economic behavior, expressed in the percentage variation of the GNP per capita. For that purpose, official figures on suicide and gross domestic product for period 1979-2007, are taken. First, a descriptive analysis on suicide data is done, finding that men commits suicide much more than women do (77%-23%), and the higher age rank, this proportion goes up even more. Also, it was found that people between 15 and 29 years old, represent half of total committed suicides (49,8%). Then, a correlation analysis between percentage variation of GDP per capita and rate of suicides per 100.000 habitants, was done, finding a high negative correlation (r=-0,91), and a high statistical significance was tested (p=0,000). Later, it is established a simple linear regression model between studied variables, that allows formulating a predictive equation of the suicide rates, based on the historical correlation between this variable and variation of GDP.Este artículo pretende mostrar parte de la relación entre la tasa de suicidios y el comportamiento económico, expresado en la variación porcentual del PIB per cápita. Para tal efecto se toman las cifras oficiales sobre suicidio y producto interno bruto de Colombia para el periodo 1979-2007. Primero se hace un análisis descriptivo sobre las cifras de suicidio, en donde se encuentra que los hombres se suicidan mucho más que las mujeres (77%-23%), y que a mayor rango de edad, esta proporción se acentúa aún más. También se halló que las personas entre 15 a 29 años representan la mitad del total de los suicidios (49,8%). Posteriormente se hace un análisis de correlación entre la variación porcentual del PIB per cápita y la tasa de suicidios por cada 100.000 habitantes, que identifica una alta correlación negativa (r=- 0,91), y se comprueba una alta significancia estadística (p=0,000). Luego se establece un modelo de regresión lineal simple entre las variables estudiadas, que permite formular una ecuación predictiva de las tasas de suicidio con base en la correlación histórica entre esta variable y la variación del PIB
