Las recientes elecciones presidenciales de la República del Chad: ¿factor de estabilización en el Sahel?

The latest presidential elections in the Republic of Chad have assured a fifth term for President Idriss Déby Inot. His firm commitment to support the security of the region and, especially, in the fight against terrorism they have contributed to the confidence and the support of many Western countries and of the African institutions. Nevertheless, the lack of democratic freedoms in the country and the poor management of the important revenues generated by oil exploitation in recent years, which have not resulted in a significant improvement of the serious level of underdevelopment of the population, could eventually become destabilizing factors in the country and thus in the entire Sahel region threatened by terrorism and organized crime.Las pasadas elecciones presidenciales en la República del Chad han vuelto a dar la victoria al presidente Idriss Déby Inot para un quinto mandato. Su firme compromiso para apoyar la seguridad de la región y, en particular, en la lucha contra el terrorismo, le han granjeado la confianza y el apoyo de Occidente y de las instituciones africanas. Sin embargo, la falta de libertades democráticas en el país y la deficiente gestión de los importantes ingresos generados por la explotación del petróleo de los últimos años, que no ha logrado mejorar el grave nivel de subdesarrollo de la población, pueden llegar a ser factores de desestabilización del país y con ello, de toda la región del Sahel, amenazada por el terrorismo y la criminalidad organizada
