This article presents a preliminary investigation about the internal decoration of Nova Friburgo palace, where the Museum of the Republic has been operating since 1960 in the city of Rio de Janeiro. This research is willing to discuss how the symbolic dispute over the collective imaginary, initiated by the republicans at the time of the transition of governments, was resolved by analyzing the interior decoration of the palace. The ambiance of the palace shows the survival of almost all monarchical symbols but, at the same time, tries to make an idea of overcoming with the past by additioning Republican symbols made of stucco.
