Estado, instituciones y desarrollo: Evaluando las causas del crecimiento económico de América Latina en las postrimerías del siglo XI

This paper analyzes from a theoretical point of view the economic growth in Latin America in the late nineteenth and in the early twentieth centuries, that is, the moment when this region began to reduce the gap in terms of GDP per capita compared to United States, the most developed economy in the American continent. Latin America was not an underdeveloped region in colonial times, but in the early nineteenth century, economic growth began to be much leaner in relation to other parts of the world and, in particular, with respect to the North American country. This has led to construct some hypotheses that, with the use of different dependent and independent variables, have tried to provide answers to the following questions. First, why the more developed regions at the beginning of European colonization grew so scantily after independence processes in the early nineteenth century, while some of the most backward areas of the continent began to have an exponential growth? And secondly, why Latin American economies began to grow at such high growth rates in the late nineteenth century?En este trabajo se examina desde un punto de vista teórico el crecimiento económico experimentado en América Latina a fines del siglo XIX y principios del XX, cuando la región comenzó a reducir la brecha en términos de PBI per cápita respecto a Estado Unidos, la economía más desarrollada del continente americano. Latinoamérica no fue una región subdesarrollada en la época colonial, pero a principios del siglo XIX el crecimiento económico comenzó a ser mucho más magro en relación con otras partes del mundo y, en especial, respecto al país del norte. Lo anterior ha llevado a construir algunas hipótesis que, con la utilización de distintas variables dependientes e independientes, han tratado de dar respuestas a las siguientes preguntas. En primer lugar, ¿por qué las regiones más desarrolladas al inicio de la colonización europea crecieron tan escasamente luego de los procesos independentistas a comienzos del siglo XIX, mientras algunas de las áreas más atrasadas del continente comenzaron a tener un crecimiento exponencial? Y en segundo lugar, ¿por qué las economías latinoamericanas comenzaron a crecer a tasas tan elevadas en las postrimerías del siglo XIX
