This paper analyzes from a theoretical point of view the economic growth in Latin America in the late nineteenth and in the early twentieth centuries, that is, the moment when this region began to reduce the gap in terms of GDP per capita compared to United States, the most developed economy in the American continent. Latin America was not an underdeveloped region in colonial times, but in the early nineteenth century, economic growth began to be much leaner in relation to other parts of the world and, in particular, with respect to the North American country.
