Martial’s epigrams are considered the best picture of Rome during the Flavian period. A first approach to his work impresses the reader by the excess and the vices of the described society and by the obscenity of the language used by the writer. However, on a deeper reading, there are discovered compositions of great beauty, and there is also recognized a voice exposing a philosophy of life that extol simplicity and restraint and condemn excesses.
