This article discusses the place of English in terms of the number of hours of instruction in relation to the other foreign languages that are or have been part of the curriculum of the Uruguayan secondary education, as shown in the plans of study of 1941, 1963, 1968, 1976, 1986, 1993, 1996, and 2003. This objective requires particular attention to the status of the language; in this case, its use in a privileged field such as teaching in the period under study.
