Spanish rural areas are characterized by high sex ratios and high proportion of over 65 population. This paper addresses the influence of this demographic context on informal care strategies for elderly people, since family remains the main care provider in Spain. The methodology combines both quantitative and qualitative data. Census data have been used to prove how demography poses relevant challenges to the traditional distribution of care work. In-depth interviews were conducted to analyze current strategies to organize social care. Results show the unsustainability of traditional informal care, the rise of new care mechanisms and the necessary entrance of men as care providers.La demografía de las zonas rurales en España se caracteriza...
