Evolución histórica del concepto inercia: Primera parte

The principle of inertia constitutes one of the fundamental pillars of Classical Physics, which states all the essential changes in the understanding of the universe that marked the ending of Medieval and Renaissance Physics of the 17th century. Since then, its own definition and conceptualization have been assimilated to become household terms and its use has extended to other areas of knowledge, generally to describe an opposition to change. With all this, the concept of inertia is much more complex than what it seems at first sight and behind its seemingly simple statement, one can find the long and fertile history of its conception. The great stages in the evolution of the concept of inertia are tied to the different ways in which the nature of movement is understood —be it natural movement, quality and force impressed and the inertial state of movement. In this manner, the history of physical thinking comes to us in three large periods. The first period is the Aristotelian Physics, the second one constitutes the physics of impetus, and finally, the Mathematical Physics. In this work, we are going to analyze the evolution of the concept of inertia from the first critics of Hiparco of Rodas, through theorizations in Aristotelian Physics of the movement of projectiles, to the physics of impetus, leaving its final formulation by Newton in the 17th century to a second part.El principio de inercia constituye uno de los pilares fundamentales de la física clásica, en cuyo enunciado están postulados todos los cambios esenciales en la concepción del mundo que marcó el fin de la física medieval y renacentista del siglo XVII. Desde entonces, el concepto –y el término mismo– de “inercia”, se han asimilado de tal manera que han llegado a ser parte del lenguaje cotidiano, y su utilización se ha extendido a otros campos del conocimiento para designar, en general, la resistencia al cambio. Con todo esto, el concepto de inercia es mucho más complejo de lo que puede parecer a primera vista, y tras la aparente sencillez de su enunciado se encuentra la prolongada y fecunda historia de su formación. Las grandes etapas de la evolución del concepto de inercia van unidas a los diversos modos de entender la naturaleza del movimiento –ya sea como movimiento natural, cualidad o fuerza impresa y estado inercial de movimiento–. De esta manera, la historia del pensamiento físico, se nos presenta en tres grandes etapas. La primera etapa es la física aristotélica, la segunda etapa está constituida por la física del ímpetus, finalmente, la tercera etapa es la física matematizada. En este trabajo, analizaremos la evolución del concepto inercia desde las primeras críticas de Hiparco de Rodas, pasando por la teorización en la física aristotélica al movimiento de proyectiles, hasta la física del ímpetus, dejando para una segunda parte su formulación definitiva por Newton en el siglo XVII
