Comparación de la actividad acaricida de los aceites esenciales de ocimum basilicum, coriandrum sativum y thymus vulgaris contra tetranychus urticae

Ecuador is the third largest exporter of flowers in the world; their diversity and quality are internationally renowned and they are a major contribution to the country’s economy. However, this industry is threatened by numerous pests; one of the most harmful being the acarus known as “red spider mite” or Tetranychus urticae. Dangerous, synthetic pesticides are used in order to control this mite. Our research was carried out in the flower farm of “La Juliana” (north Andean zone of Ecuador, 00◦03’00” N and 78◦12’00”, 2840 mamsl). Its objective was to evaluate the acaricidal properties of three essential oils: coriander (Coriandrum sativum), basil (Ocimum basilicum), and thyme (Thymus vulgaris), against the Tetranychus urticae mite. The effects of the acaricide test were measured 24 and 48 hours after applying the essential oils, and the results were compared through non-parametric analysis. The effective concentration for Ocimum basilicum was of 1.60 %, for Thymus vulgaris was of 1.60 % and for Coriandrum sativum, 3.12 %. Furthermore, each concentration was compared to the research control “ethanol” group and a synthetic pesticide mixture used regularly by the flower farm technicians. After 24 hours, the thyme essential oil showed the best acaricidal effects, after 24 and 48 hours high effectiveness was observed for the thyme and basil essential oils. Finally, a natural product was formulated whose active ingredient was the thyme essential oil and compared to the Abamectin-Tetradifon synthetic blend, showing a similar acaricidal effect.Ecuador es el tercer país exportador de flores del mundo, su diversidad y calidad son un atractivo internacional y representan un gran aporte económico para el país; sin embargo, estos cultivos se encuentran amenazados por diversas plagas, una de las más perjudiciales es el ácaro “arañita roja”Tetranychus urticae. Para su control se usan plaguicidas sintéticos tóxicos. La presente investigación fue realizada en la Florícola “La Julian” (zona andina norte de Ecuador, 00◦03’00” N y 78◦12’00” O, 2840 msnm), su objetivo fue el de identificar la actividad acaricida de los aceites esenciales de albahaca (Ocimum basilicum), tomillo (Thymus vulgaris) y cilantro (Coriandrum sativum) contra el ácaro Tetranychus urticae. Los análisis de acción acaricida se realizaron 24 y 48 horas después de haber aplicado el aceite esencial, y los resultados fueron comparados mediante análisis no paramétrico. Para Ocimum basilicum la concentración efectiva fue de 1,6 %, para Thymus vulgaris 1,6 % y para Coriandrum sativum 3.12 %. Además, cada concentración se comparó con el control de la investigación “etanol” y con una mezcla de productos sintéticos utilizada regularmente en la Florícola. A las 24 horas, el aceite esencial de tomillo presentó el mejor efecto acaricida; a las 24 y 48 horas, la efectividad fue mayor con los aceites de tomillo y de albahaca. Finalmente, se formuló un acaricida natural cuyo principio activo fue el aceite esencial de tomillo; éste se comparó con la mezcla sintética Abamectina-Tetradifón, mostrando similar efecto acaricida
