There is a commonly-found bird in Central and South America that receives different names depending on the country and the region. Most of these names (benteveo, bienteví, cristofué, bichofué, bichofeo, pitojuán) are based on a meaningful interpretation of its characteristic song. These ornithonyms have been characterized as delocutive in order to highlight the fact that they derive from expressions of a natural language that seem to sound similar to the sounds made by these birds. In this paper, I will analyse this phenomenon and explore its relations with purely onomatopoeic ornithonyms.
