This article questions the traditional account of Chilean and River Plate voseo verb forms which derives them from those corresponding to vosotros. To that effect, it uses at least six different rules, including three monophthongization processes that completely lack phonological motivation. Alternatively, the article argues that the voseo forms are not synchronically derived from the second person plural forms, but rather from underlying representations that coincide with those corresponding to the non-honorific second person singular.
