This article analyses how water in colonial Mexico underwent a process of privatisation and incorporation as a public utility. Since then it has been subjected to forms of control and regulation by municipal governments and private initiatives backed by economic and political power. The information available reveals distinct modalities in the management processes that regulated the provision of water in the cities and their contribution to the modernization of the country from 1880 to 1940.
