Centros y fronteras: el panorama internacional

The growth in institutions and initiatives in digital humanities in the last few years has yet not led to greater definition in the field, and the different labels used for the activity (‘humanidades digitales’, ‘informatica umanistica e la cultura digitale’, ‘humanités numériques’) not only reflect differing local circumstances, but also important divergence in the manner of conception. Can we talk of the digital humanities as a unified phenomenon on an international level, or do they rather represent an accumulation of interrelated practices and perspectives? This chapter will study the centres and limits of a field which experiences continuous and rapid change, and aims to highlight some of the key challenges which await the digital humanities in a period of major academic and social transformation caused by the digital age. Meanwhile, the rapid evolution of new international associations in the field has highlighted the large amount of digital research carried out away from the glare of international fora for digital humanities, where Anglophone academics have a certain advantage. Spanish-language initiatives like Humanidades Digitales Hispánicas (HDH), Red de Humanidades Digitales (RedHD) and el Día de Humanidades Digitales 2013 (DíaHD2013, which also has a Portuguese language component) have attempted to improve the visibility of a tradition which already has strong roots, but which does not always figure prominently on the international stage, and these form part of a broader ongoing debate about how to ensure that digital humanities become a truly international phenomenon.El aumento de instituciones e iniciativas en humanidades digitales en los últimos años no ha ayudado a definir el campo hasta el momento, y la diversidad en las etiquetas empleadas para describir la actividad (‘humanidades digitales’, ‘informatica umanistica e la cultura digitale’, ‘humanités numériques’) no solamente refleja circunstancias locales distintas, sino divergencias importantes en la manera de concebirlo. ¿Se puede hablar de las humanidades digitales como un fenómeno único a nivel internacional, o más bien representa una acumulación de prácticas y perspectivas interrelacionadas? Este capítulo estudiará los centros y límites de un campo que se transforma con relativa rapidez, y señala algunos de los retos que le esperan todavía en medio de transformaciones académicas y sociales significantes causadas por la era digital. El brote de nuevas asociaciones internacionales en el campo ha puesto de relieve, además, la gran cantidad de investigación digital que toma lugar fuera de los foros internacionales, donde los protagonistas anglófonos juegan con cierta ventaja. Con iniciativas como Humanidades Digitales Hispánicas (HDH), Red de Humanidades Digitales (RedHD) y el Día de Humanidades Digitales 2013 (DíaHD2013), se ha pretendido visualizar y fomentar una tradición ya con raíces profundas, pero no siempre muy bien conocida, en países castellanoparlantes, y esto entabla retos para la visibilidad que forman parte de un debate importante sobre cómo conseguir unas humanidades digitales con un carácter auténticamente global
