The objective of this article is to analyze in some detail three specific cases from late nineteenth-century medical journals and treatises in which doctors present patients identified as inverts/homosexuals. Jean-Martin Charcot, Valentin Magnan and Paul-Emile Garnier, three prominent specialists in the field of “legal medicine”, can be seen to adopt certain rhetorical and other strategies in their case presentations. An analysis of this material reveals the emergence of new and evolving patient-doctor relationships which can be taken as symptoms of a relatively rapid paradigm shift within the positivist scientific model.
