Mujer y poder: representaciones sociales. Caso de Beatriz Bechara de Borge, primera Rectora de la Universidad de Cartagena 1988-1990

This paper reports part of a study done on the rectory of Beatriz Bechara de Borge, the first and only woman that up to date has assumed leadership at the University Of Cartagena; the first University in the Colombian Caribbean. It describes the social representations that occur in the short time she spent as chancellor from September of 1988 to March of 1990. Her administrative work not only marked the first attempt of gender organization, of the principal administrative position at this university, but also how the University Development Plan she created was designed to foster a modern university, based on a humanistic and scientific education approached and in the service of the Colombian Caribbean region. We also highlight that her University Educational Project had difficulty in a society like the Colombian one, which despite having given the transition to university education for women in the third decade of the twentieth century, it is also true that inequity is perpetuated in relation to the participation of women at university leadership.El presente artículo recoge parte del estudio sobre la rectoría de Beatriz Bechara de Borge1, la primera y única mujer que hasta hoy ha asumido la dirección de la primera institución universitaria del Caribe Colombiano, la Universidad de Cartagena, y recrea las representaciones sociales que se producen en el corto tiempo que estuvo como rectora entre septiembre de 1988 a marzo de 1990, periodo durante el cual, su gestión administrativa no solo significó el primer intento de organización de género, del principal cargo administrativo en esta institución universitaria, sino que además su plan de desarrollo universitario estuvo orientado a fomentar una universidad moderna, fundamentada en una educación humanística y científica al servicio de la región Caribe colombiana así como en la innovación tecnológica. Sin embargo, su proyecto educativo universitario no avanzó sin tropiezos en medio de una sociedad como la colombiana, que a pesar de haber dado el tránsito hacia la formación universitaria de la mujer en la tercera década del siglo XX bajo el impulso de sus propias luchas y presiones por la igualdad de género, no es menos cierto, que se perpetua aun la inequidad en lo referente a la participación de la mujer en la dirigencia universitaria
