In this paper I expose the essential characteristics of the Indian republics established in Jesuit missions in the colonial northwest of New Spain, remarking the great importance of the military element. The inclusion of military officers was the most significant contribution made by the northern Indians in the constitution of their councils. In this region it was impossible to disarm the Indians, as conquerors required their support to consolidate their advance on the frontier.
