Although Dante Alighieri, especially in De vulgari eloquentia and the Vita Nova, had had a fundamental role in the consolidation of the modern idea of lyric, i.e. of the idea of a vernacular, subjective and self-reflexive lyric, we do not find the word lyric in his work.
