In the Comarca Lagunera from the states of Coahuila and Durango, Mexico; water availability is one of the major constraints for fodder production. During autumn - winter grass ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum), clover (Trifolium) and oats (Avena sativa L.) are established. However, the limited availability of water during this period, there is interest in improving water productivity by establishing new crops. Triticale has proven to be a competitive species with wheat (Triticum spp.), barley (Hordeum vulgare), rye (Secale cereale) and ryegrass (Lolium).
