Influencia de la madera juvenil de pino radiata sobre las propiedades mecánicas de tableros osb

The aim of this project was to study the impact of radiata pine (Pinus radiata D. Don) juvenile wood on the mechanical properties of oriented strandboards (OSB). The wood samples were obtained from 26 years old plantation trees growing in the Eighth Region of Chile. The determination of the juvenile wood zone was based on the radial variation of the growth rings width using an X-ray growth ring analyzer. The characterization of the anatomical structure was performed by image analysis of microtomed sections using a commercial software. The experimental design considers as independent variables the proportion of juvenile wood (0; 30; 70 and 100%) and the orientation of the strands (radial and tangential). The pressing conditions were: temperature of 195ºC, 40 bars maximum pressure, and pressing time of 230 seconds. The results show that the proportion of juvenile wood determines the properties of OSB panels. Specifically, internal bond (0.464 MPa for juvenile wood and 0.698 MPa for mature wood) and modulus of elasticity (3271 MPa for juvenile wood and 5159 for mature wood) decrease significantly with the increase of the juvenile wood proportion. On the other hand, the modulus of rupture (29.3 MPa for juvenile wood and 36.2 MPa for mature wood) was independent of the proportion of juvenile woodEn este trabajo se estudia la influencia de la madera juvenil de pino radiata (Pinus radiata D. Don) sobre las propiedades mecánicas de tableros de hojuelas orientadas OSB. La madera para los ensayos es recogida de 10 árboles en pié de 26 años creciendo en plantaciones manejadas de la Octava región, Chile. La determinación de madera juvenil se realiza observando la variación radial de los anillos de crecimiento de la madera, usando un analizador de anillos en base a rayos X. Los detalles de la estructura anatómica son determinados sobre cortes microtomados, mediante análisis de imágenes usando un software comercial. El diseño experimental considera como factores variables la proporción de madera juvenil (0, 30, 70 y 100 % de madera juvenil) y el tipo de corte de las hojuelas (radial y tangencial). El programa de prensado utilizado es temperatura de 195 °C, una presión máxima de 40 bars y un tiempo de prensado de 230 segundos.Los resultados muestran que la proporción de madera juvenil condiciona las propiedades de los tableros OSB. En particular el IB (con 0.46 MPa para madera juvenil y 0.70 MPa para madera adulta) y el MOE (madera juvenil de 3271 y de 5159 MPa para madera madura) disminuyen significativamente con el incremento de la proporción de madera juvenil. Los valores del MOR de 34 MPa en madera juvenil y 36 MPa en el caso de madera madura, en cambio, son independientes de la proporción de madera juveni
