De Blancanieves, Cenicienta y Aurora a Tiana, Rapunzel y Elsa: ¿qué imagen de la mujer transmite Disney?

The purpose of the present article is to analyse how women are represented in Disney films. Its aim is to compare the first princesses (Snow White, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty) with the very last ones (Tiana, Rapunzel and Elsa). Whilst the late princesses are a bit more resolute, proactive, with clear ideas about what they hope to accomplish and how to do it, the most symbolic ones were submissive, passive and in need of a man who rescued them. How does Disney depict women? Being aware of the strategies of this depiction is essential because the studio is a multinational that sets values worldwide. Besides, the audience they address is the most vulnerable one. Although Walt Disney himself liked to say that he did not make films in order to educate, just for a purpose of entertainment, the fact is that these titles carry strong ideological content. For many years, women representation has followed the very specific characteristics that conform the Disney canon, established by Snowhite, but that canon is slowly beginning to fade out.El objetivo de este artículo es analizar la imagen de la mujer que transmite Disney, a través de una breve historia desde las primeras princesas (Blancanieves, Cenicienta y la Bella Durmiente) hasta las últimas (Tiana, Rapunzel y Elsa). Mientras que las de la última década son un poco más decididas, proactivas, tienen ideas claras y luchan por conseguirlas, las tres más emblemáticas del estudio eran sumisas, pasivas y siempre necesitaban que un hombre las rescatase. ¿Qué visión de las mujeres ofrece Disney y por qué debemos estudiarla? Analizarla es fundamental porque la multinacional ejerece como forjadora de valores y por el público tan susceptible al que se dirigen, el infantil. Aunque Walt Disney decía que no hacía películas para transmitir ideas, sino solamente para entretener, la carga ideológica de estas obras es grande. Durante años la representación femenina ha seguido un canon de características muy definidas, establecido ya desde Blancanieves, pero que, lentamente, comienza a resquebrajarse
