La edición en neerlandés de La sombra del Caudillo

Los de abajo and Mala yerba, by Mariano Azuela and El águila y la serpiente and La sombra del Caudillo, by Martín Luís Guzmán were the first mexican novels to be translated. Until today the history of those translations has not been written in spite of its importance to learn about the spreading of mexican literature in linguistic domains other than Spanish. With the aim of helping to bridge this gap, this article tells the story of the Dutch edition of La sombra del Caudillo. One the one hand, it reinforces the argument that France served as a platform to give latin American literature a more universal scope; on the other, it shows that the edition was the result, not of a predetermined plan, but of a chain of coincidences which involved important figures of dutch literature of the first half of the 20th century.Las primeras novelas mexicanas que se tradujeron fueron Los de abajo y Mala yerba, de Mariano Azuela y El águila y la serpiente y La sombra del Caudillo, de Martín Luís Guzmán. Hasta ahora no se ha escrito la historia de esas traducciones. Ello no obstante su importancia para conocer la génesis de la difusión de la literatura mexicana en ámbitos lingüísticos distintos al del español. Con el ánimo de contribuir a llenar ese vacío, este artículo cuenta la historia de la edición en neerlandés de La sombra del Caudillo. Por una parte, refuerza la tesis de que Francia sirvió como plataforma para que la literatura latinoamericana adquiriera una proyección más universal; por la otra, pone de manifiesto que la edición fue resultado, no de un plan preconcebido, sino de una concatenación de casualidades, que involucraron a figuras célebres de la literatura neerlandesa de la primera mitad del siglo XX
