Esophageal strictures or stenosis are generally triggered by necrosis, as a result of the pressure caused by esophageal impactions that generate ulceration and erosion of the esophageal mucosa, as well as due to lesions caused by the oral administration of corrosive agents, cervical trauma and congenital strictures. Esophageal dilation procedures have been used for the treatment of strictures in humans and small animals but are rarely used in horses, given the number of sessions required for successful treatment and the limited information published on the subject.
