In the XVI and XVII century, Spain and Portugal extended their dominions to the Far East, and established business relations. The conversion to Christianity became a priority, especially in Japan, more interested in strengthening trade ties, and therefore it was more permissive at the beginning to accept the presence of the missionaries in the country.
