¿Se acerca el apocalipsis cultural? Tres perspectivas hispánicas

This present paper investigates the perspective of three Latin-American authors on contemporary culture and its defining trait: the apparently irreconcilable conflict between the elitist artist and consumerism promoted by the editorial and artistic market. Vargas Llosa, in an essay published in 2012, calls for a reassessment of the role of the artist and the intellectual as guides for the masses, but without observing the contradiction that this position entails. Daniel Tabarovski writes a plea for a “left-winged literature” which turns into an avant-garde manifesto, written, paradoxically, with an awareness of the total disappearance of the avant-garde spirit. Last, but not least, Roberto Bolaño has a profoundly pessimistic view of both elitist and mass culture. The three perspectives mentioned reveal a common discontent with regard to the inevitable transformation of Western culture, which, viewed from a different angle, has only become more democratic.El presente artículo indaga en la perspectiva de tres autores latinoamericanos sobre la situación de la cultura actual, cuya principal característica sería el conflicto aparentemente irreconciliable entre un arte elitista y el consumismopromocionado por el mercado editorial y artístico. Vargas Llosa, en un ensayo publicado en 2012, aboga por la vuelta a una valoración del papel del intelectual y del artista como guías de las masas, sin observar las contradicciones que acarrea esta posición. Daniel Tabarovski escribe un alegato a favor de una “literatura de izquierda” que resulta ser un manifiesto vanguardista escrito, paradójicamente, con la conciencia de la desaparición total del espíritu vanguardista.Roberto Bolaño, por fin, tiene una visión profundamente pesimista tanto sobre la cultura elitista como sobre la cultura masificada. Las tres perspectivas mencionadas delatan un común descontento con respecto a la transformación insoslayable de la cultura occidental, que, al considerarse desde otro ángulo, no ha hecho sino volverse más democrática
