On 12 January 2010 an earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale struck Haiti. This natural disaster intensified the existing challenges (structural development) and created a “reconstruction” necessity for a country that was already the poorest in the American continent and one of the poorest in the world (with a GNI per capita of 700 US $ according to the World Bank data). In response to that devastating earthquake, Haiti received an unprecedented wave of international assistance providing a relatively fast and coordinated response to humanitarian emergency in the short-term.
