A ethnoichthyological study of the fishes known as ruyac bagri (Pseudoplatystoma punctifer and P. tigrinum) was carried out among the Kichwa people of the Curaray Basin in Pastaza province (central Amazonian Ecuador) in order to document aspects of body topography, taxonomy, ecology and fisheries of both species. Structured interviews and graphical representations were applied by 23 informants. The main results were as follows: according to indigenous taxonomic conceptsJácome-Negrete 37there are two species of ruyac bagri with specific morphological characteristics.
