Revisión de indicadores de comunicación de aspectos ambientales para el consumo de productos sustentables

If we consider that the viability of any development goes through its economic feasibility and the whole economy is based on the consumption of goods, we could say that the economic viability of Sustainable Development goes through the consumption of sustainable products. Thus, as a society, we must change our behaviors and habits, but not the way we consume, because we could destabilize the current economic system. In this sense, the consumption of these goods depends on the ability to differentiate them from the traditional products and on how to communicate its environmental aspects. Historically, the instrument used for this purpose has been the Ecolabel, but this has not influenced the purchasing decisions and has caused confusion among consumers due to the type of indicators and how these are being used to communicate the environmental aspects of this kind of products. As a conclusion, the definition of mixed indicators; the generation of benchmarks from similar products; and the decrease of asymmetry of market information by the use of clear and credible information certified by a third party, seem to be the solution to the problem of communication for sustainable products consumption.Si consideramos que la viabilidad de todo Desarrollo pasa por su factibilidad económica y que la base de toda economía es el consumo de bienes, podríamos decir que la viabilidad económica de un Desarrollo Sustentable pasa por el consumo de productos Sustentables. Esto nos lleva a que como sociedad debemos cambiar comportamientos y hábitos de consumo, pero no la manera de consumir, pues desestabilizaríamos el sistema económico actual. En tal sentido, el consumo de estos bienes, pasa por la capacidad de éstos para diferenciarse de los productos tradicionales y de comunicar sus aspectos ambientales. Históricamente, el instrumento utilizado para este fin ha sido la Ecoetiqueta, pero ésta no ha logrado influenciar las decisiones de compra y ha causado confusión en los consumidores principalmente por el tipo de indicadores que utiliza para comunicar los aspectos ambientales de un producto y la manera de hacerlo. De este modo, la definición de indicadores mixtos que permitan generar estándares de comparación entre productos similares; el uso de información clara que disminuya la asimetría de información en el mercado; y una información creíble, certificada por una tercera parte, parecen ser la solución al problema de comunicación para el consumo de productos sustentables
