Essas diferentes formas de reprodução tem origem na grande variedade de mecanismos responsáveis tanto pela determinação do sexo como de formação dos padrões de diferenciação sexual, que incluem uma base genética, com sistemas monogênico e poligênico, e a influência de diferentes fatores ambientais, principalmente temperatura e interações sociais. Apesar dos mecanismos de determinação e diferenciação sexual serem conservados em mamíferos e aves, nos peixes parecem ser muito instável. Isto sugere, em termos evolutivos, um acúmulo de evidências participativas do processo em favor de uma unificação das estratégias que enfatizam os fatores genéticos e os ambientais. Em particular, parece que os fatores de ambiente dirigem a força responsável pelo desenvolvimento sexual e pela evolução em todos os níveis, com a seleção e a deriva genética tendo sido responsáveis por estabelecer um padrão capaz de caracterizar a determinação sexual atual.
