The purpose of this project was to reassess the efficiency of a mouthwash containing a chemical solution of chlorhexidine (0.12%), applied to students between 18 and20 years of age in a graduate programmer. The students were divided into three groups with 60 students in each (thirty men and thirty women): Group I with chlorhexidine, tooth brushing technique, and toothpaste with fluoride, Group II only with chlorhexidine, and Group III with placebo, tooth brushing technique and toothpaste with fluoride. O'Leary 's Plaque Index was used to calculate the amount of plaque at the beginning, after three, and after six weeks. The highest mean values were found in Group I of both sexes. The mean values for Groups II and III were similar during the first time and the last three weeks. The decrease in dental plaque was from 22.5% to 24.6% after the first three weeks, and 58% and 39.5% after six weeks in Group I, and almost identical in Grotps II and III.
